چکیده

The Regional Superfund Ground Water Forum is a group of EPA professionals representing EPA’s Regional Superfund Offices, committed to the identification and the resolution of ground water issues impacting the remediation of Superfund sites. The Forum is supported by and advises the Superfund Technical Support Project. Dense nonaqueous phase liquids is an issue identified by the Forum as a concern of Superfund decision-makers. For further information contact Scott G. Huling (FTS:743-2313), Jim Weaver (FTS:7432420), or Randall R. Ross (FTS: 743-2355).

Hydraulic/partitioning tracer tomography for characterization of dense nonaqueous phase liquid source zones

[1] A new technology, hydraulic/partitioning tracer tomography (HPTT), is proposed to survey spatial distributions of hydraulic properties and dense nonaqueous phase liquids (DNAPLs) in the subsurface. HPTT is nothing more than a set of multiple hydraulic/ partitioning tracer tests and synthesis of all the tests to map the spatial distributions. It involves injection of water at one borehole in...

TWO-DIMENSIONAL AREAL DNAPL RECOVERY WITH NEUTRAL BUOYANT COSOLVENT FLOODING Physical Model Design and Operation

Introduction Dense non-aqueous phase liquids (or DNAPLs) are liquids that are water immiscible and at the same time are heavier than water. When a spill occurs, these liquids can migrate into aquifers and become trapped in the pores. Some techniques proved to be efficient for the recovery of DNAPLs from the aquifers. One method is the injection of fluids through injection wells, for example, co...

The release of nonaqueous phase liquids (NAPLs) to the subsurface environment can create long-term sources of ground water contamination as the NAPL slowly dissolves into ground water (Mercer and Cohen 1990; Cohen and Mercer 1993). Effective remediation of subsurface NAPL contamination requires that NAPL be accurately located and saturations quantified. This is particularly important for dense ...

Flow and entrapment of dense nonaqueous phase liquids in physically and chemically heterogeneous aquifer formations

The migration and entrapment of dense nonaqueous phase liquids (DNAPLs) in aquifer formations is typically believed to be controlled by physical heterogeneities. This belief is based upon the assumption that permeability and capillary properties are determined by the soil texture. Capillarity and relative permeability, however, will also depend on porous medium wettability characteristics. This...
